Lifeskills Programme
The Lifeskills Programme was started in January 2010 with the objective of providing functional literacy and other employable skills to children on the verge of dropping out. In the communities and schools we work in, we often come across children who are older than the appropriate class age and are struggling with basic academic concepts due to a weak foundation. In addition to the frustration of being unable to cope with class work, these children also face pressure to start working and supplement the family income. On leaving school with an incomplete education and no employable skills, the children struggle to find work and become self sufficient.
We therefore endeavour to identify these children and offer them timely support. In addition to basic reading and writing, the children are also helped to develop organizational skills and build their confidence. They are then referred to vocational training institutes to learn a trade of their choice and helped to complete a practical training. Those who are of employable age are helped to secure jobs and others who wish to appear for the National Institute of Open Schooling (Std. X) exam are assisted as well.
Of our first batch of 25 children, several have already secured jobs and others are well set on their way to a more fulfilling future.
